A Tribute To 9/11 – “Looking On, Watching the Building of the Freedom Tower”

Advertisements

About two years ago the company I work for was located downtown in the Financial District, not far from the site of the World Trade Towers. For close to three years, I worked on a self motivated project to photograph the visitors to “Ground Zero”. Those visitors also were witnessing the rebuilding of the World Trade Tower, or the Freedom Tower. Part of the project was published on the “Inspired Eye” webzine and caught the attention of Time Magazine, who interviewed me about what I was doing. I have tried many times to see this project published or exhibited, but so far no luck. Maybe fifteen years is still not enough time for this event to be looked at objectively.

“Every day, thousands of tourists take snapshots of the World Trade Center site in Manhattan’s busy Financial District, where the cloud-piercing One World Trade Center tower has been under construction since 2006. But it’s rare that these camera-wielding visitors get photographed themselves. In his series Looking On: Watching the Building of the Freedom Tower, photographer Keith Goldstein becomes a spectator of spectators, capturing tourists’ unguarded facial expressions as they stare skyward—mouths agape, necks stretched, contemplating the significance of the immense silver skyscraper before them.”
