MANHATTAN, HORIZON VERTICAL
Keith Goldstein est né à Brooklyn, New York. Aujourd’hui, il vit toujours à Manhattan, dans le «Upper West side». C’est un photographe arpenteur dont la vie et le regard se fondent dans une des mégapoles les plus densément peuplées du monde. De sa production photographique résulte une collection de milliers de prises de vues qui ne cesse de s’enrichir.
Il a commencé la photographie très jeune et a eu ensuite une formation artistique en cours du soir avec David Attie. Il a obtenu un BFA en photographie avec mention à la School of Visual Arts de New-York où il étudia avec Tad Yamashiro. Il poursuivit ensuite ses expériences auprès de Carl Toth à la Cranbrook Academy of Art.
Keith Goldstein expose ses œuvres depuis 1980. Au fil de sa carrière, son travail est publié dans de multiples médias et fait l’objet de très nombreuses expositions aux États-Unis, au Canada, et plusieurs en Europe (Tchécoslovaquie, Belgique, Allemagne, Écosse, Italie…). Cette exposition dans la Galerie Blanche de la Première Rue sera sa première en France.
Sa production photographique en noir et blanc et en couleur, quasi-journalière, se divise en deux démarches très différentes. L’une se passe au niveau du sol, dans un regard opposé à toutes visions touristiques. Keith Goldstein capte la vie ordinaire des gens les plus modestes au pied des gratte-ciel et des immeubles. Il est un «street photographer» viscéral, direct et immédiat, qui regarde en face la dureté de ses sujets. Les caractères humains, et leurs expressions dans l’instant, sont plus importants que l’image qui en est faite. Son autre démarche a pour objet les gratte-ciel de Manhattan, photographiés depuis les gratte-ciel eux-mêmes. Dans cette frontalité, il suit une quête contemplative des changements de lumières au fil des heures, à travers les reflets, les matériaux, les vides et les pleins découpés par la multitude des façades… Ces photographies s’inscrivent dans une autre temporalité et rapprochent leurs plasticités du langage des tableaux et des collages abstraits, pour se décliner dans une infinité d’expressions plastiques différentes.
Keith Goldstein a accepté de nous laisser composer l’exposition en faisant cohabiter ces deux approches photographiques. Le dialogue entre ces deux polarités convoque du sens visuel qui nous permettra de révéler, sous un jour nouveau, son regard d’artiste tourné vers Manhattan. En même temps, nous espérons provoquer un dialogue enrichissant entre l’exposition et le bâtiment de Le Corbusier où se trouve la galerie. Il est lui aussi un immeuble de (relativement) grande hauteur qui compte dans l’histoire de l’architecture, mais il implique une idée utopique de la ville radicalement opposée à cette référence ultime de l’imaginaire urbain qu’est Manhattan.

MANHATTAN, VERTICAL HORIZON
Keith Goldstein was born in Brooklyn, New York. Today, he still lives in Manhattan, on the “Upper West Side”. He is a surveying photographer whose life and gaze blend into one of the most densely populated megacities in the world. His photographic production results in a collection of thousands of shots that continues to grow.
He began photography at a very young age and then had artistic training in evening classes with David Attie. He obtained a BFA in photography with honors at the School of Visual Arts in New York where he studied with Tad Yamashiro. He then continued his experiences with Carl Toth at the Cranbrook Academy of Art.
Keith Goldstein has been exhibiting his works since 1980. Throughout his career, his work has been published in multiple media and has been the subject of numerous exhibitions in the United States, Canada, and several in Europe (Czechoslovakia, Belgium, Germany, Scotland, Italy, etc.). This exhibition in the Galerie Blanche de la Première Rue will be his first in France.
His photographic production in black and white and in color, almost daily, is divided into two very different approaches. One takes place at ground level, in a view opposed to all tourist visions. Keith Goldstein captures the ordinary life of the most modest people at the foot of skyscrapers and buildings. He is a visceral, direct and immediate “street photographer”, who looks the harshness of his subjects in the face. Human characters, and their expressions in the moment, are more important than the image that is made of them. His other approach has as its object the skyscrapers of Manhattan, photographed from the skyscrapers themselves. In this frontality, he follows a contemplative quest of the changes of light over the hours, through the reflections, the materials, the voids and the solids cut by the multitude of facades… These photographs are part of another temporality and bring their plasticity closer to the language of paintings and abstract collages, to decline in an infinity of different plastic expressions. Keith Goldstein agreed to let us compose the exhibition by making these two photographic approaches coexist. The dialogue between these two polarities calls upon the visual sense that will allow us to reveal, in a new light, his artist’s gaze turned towards Manhattan. At the same time, we hope to provoke an enriching dialogue between the exhibition and the building by Le Corbusier where the gallery is located. It is also a (relatively) tall building that counts in the history of architecture, but it implies a utopian idea of the city radically opposed to this ultimate reference of the urban imagination that is Manhattan.
