Finding Your Voice/Vision

Here’s a question I get asked often – “How do I find my voice, vision in photography?”

Finding your “voice” in photography is about developing a unique perspective and style that reflects your personal vision and experiences. Here are some steps to help you on this journey:

  1. Explore Different Genres: Experiment with various types of photography—landscapes, portraits, street photography, macro, etc. This will help you discover what resonates most with you.
  2. Study Other Photographers: Look at the work of photographers you admire. Analyze their styles, techniques, and themes. This can inspire you while also helping you understand what you want to convey.
  3. Develop a Concept: Think about the stories or themes you want to express. Whether it’s emotion, social issues, or nature, having a concept can guide your work.
  4. Practice Regularly: The more you shoot, the more you’ll understand what works for you. Don’t be afraid to take risks and make mistakes—they’re part of the learning process.
  5. Edit and Reflect: After shooting, spend time editing and reviewing your photos. Pay attention to what makes you excited about certain images and why.
  6. Seek Feedback: Share your work with others and get constructive criticism. Different perspectives can help you refine your style.
  7. Stay True to Yourself: Ultimately, your voice should reflect who you are. Don’t feel pressured to conform to trends; authenticity resonates.
  8. Be Patient: Developing a unique voice takes time. Enjoy the journey and be open to evolving as an artist.

As you grow, your voice may change, and that’s part of the creative process. Embrace it!
