To the Core

Feeling the weight of countless unanswered emails, applications submitted, and broken promises, the harsh reality sets in. Despite my experience and age, the prospects of securing a job seem bleak. Each application filled out ends in silent rejection upon a mere glance at my profile. I’ve never been a high earner, but my income, combined with my wife’s, has always sufficed to support our family. Working side by side, we navigated life together.

The news of my redundancy due to corporate restructuring hits hard. Strangers, who I never truly crossed paths with, dictated the end of my tenure, while those hired above me after brief encounters made decisions impacting my livelihood. The irony is palpable.

Reflecting on the past year, I realize the irony of training my successors in my final days, a bittersweet contribution to the company’s success over my 14-year tenure.

Yet, amidst this turmoil, a silver lining emerges. The newfound freedom allows me to prioritize what truly matters – my family and personal projects that have remained steadfast companions. Life unfolds now on my terms, a liberating realization of self-reliance and resilience.

In this unexpected turn of events, a blessing reveals itself in the simplicity of life’s core values.

  1. Self-reliance and resiliance. Keith, good for you. ‘Life unfolds now on my terms’–I like the sound of that. As Audrey says, ‘such beautiful words.’
