The diversity of Flushing, Queens.

Flushing, Queens, is named after the Dutch city of Vlissingen (which itself means “flushing” in Dutch), as the area was founded by Dutch settlers in 1645 and originally called Vlissingen before being Anglicized to Flushing after the English took control of the colony. The English name “Flushing” is an Anglicized form of the Dutch name for the city, and the pronunciation evolved over time.
