Eleven weeks ago I underwent cervical spine surgery. Fifteen years ago it was misdiagnosed as a torn rotator cuff. I did physical therapy for number of weeks, and was able to retain control of my right arm though it had atrophied. Over the last 15 months, my arm began to get worse with tingling in my hands and a hot painful nerve traveling down my arm. The nerves were becoming affected in my left arm, right side of my face, chest, and legs as well.
I had a great surgeon at the Hospital for Special Surgery. Everyday is different. Major symptoms have resolved, but residual symptoms change each day. I was told it could be a year before I know what will be with my arm. I have full use below shoulder height, but cannot raise my arm any higher. PT is helping. Incremental changes.
I have to work hard. Luckily, I can still hold a camera and photograph with the use of my left arm for support.
Arthritis, nerve damage, is no joke. Don’t be sedentary.
Keep moving.
Oh, Keith–a misdiagnosis fifteen years ago. Who would have thought? You are right about keeping moving. Hard when you are older though and in pain. I hope PT continues to help you.
Good luck in the year ahead and keep up the PT!
Thanks Adam!! Hope all is well with you!
Been there, came out without the use of my right hand. Without being a wise guy, thankfully you can use a camera. I say that because that will be your best PT over time.
I’m getting another major neck surgery soon, and when I get out somehow I will go out shooting.
Good luck, Ted
You have been through a lot, Keith. But I read resilience, strength and determination in your words. PT (and actually doing it at home) can help so much. I’m thankful you can still shoot. To lose that ability would be devastating. Keep up the good work both in healing and in photography. I’m rooting for you.
