Oh, what a memory this brings back for me, Keith. My Italian grandparents lived in Newark NJ and my grandfather, who spoke not a word of English, would sit outside at tables like this (as far as I remember) and play checkers with his cronies. The talk, the movements of their hands, both as they spoke and as they played….I can close my eyes and still see it. Thanks so much for this.
There was a small park along Houston Street many years ago. It felt like an extension of Little Italy. I would walk by sometimes and these older Italian men would be there playing bocce ball, chess, and checkers. One doesn’t see bocce courts anymore.

That is such a shame. Those old neighborhoods were so wonderful.
